Picture this: you’re a baby ARMY, just discovering BTS, and you’re beginning to head down that famous rabbit hole. Like many, you turn to social media to get a glimpse into who the boys are. Besides their talent, BTS’s variety show Run BTS has inspired plenty of entertaining content. In the hands of talented fans, it produces funny and engaging videos – you know the ones – when you’ve had one of those days and need a much-needed laugh or a way to unwind after a long day. While these act as switch-off moments for us, the viewer, the creators behind the channels put in an incredible amount of work into what can be a short video. Even BTS themselves enjoy a good compilation, having watched them on Weverse lives, and the result is they’ve ended up becoming a nice introduction for the fandom.
As mentioned, the amount of work and effort that goes into making videos is no small feat. Countless hours, creative burnout, and time spent on the smallest details can make you wonder: why keep doing it? As many creatives will tell you, it’s what they love; an outlet we’re all drawn to. No matter how much we want to step away, we always come back. I had the pleasure to talk with Momo, aka SugArmyy,a figure known for their top-tier editing and BTS compilations that have become a staple for ARMYs around the world.
Did you have a background in video or editing before starting on YouTube, or did you learn as you went?
Momo: I wouldn’t say that I had experience in video editing, but I did play around with Windows Movie Maker when I was young. Looking back, I realise that video editing was always something I was interested in. I used to make stop-motion videos for Webkinz!
What inspired you to launch a channel focusing purely on BTS?
Momo: K-pop came into my life when I was around 11 years old. I used to listen to the big groups casually (2NE1, KARA, Super Junior, T-ara, etc.), but no one caught my eye as much as BTS did. They were the first group that I really became a fan of. As I watched more and more videos of them, I started noticing patterns and funny moments that I wanted to highlight.
How do you combat creative burnout or those times when coming up with new ideas feels tough? As many creatives can relate to that struggle!
Momo: This is something I still struggle with, to this day! I have been pretty inconsistent with my uploads lately because of burnout and creative block. I usually let myself take breaks and focus on something else in my life. Then, out of nowhere, an idea usually comes to my mind. I also watch older BTS content and catch up on new content, which usually gives me some ideas.
For most baby ARMYs, they end up going down the BTS rabbit hole and usually start over on YouTube watching compilations. Yours, however, is the one most people tend to mention as the channel they start with – myself included! How does it feel knowing you play a part in the beginning of their BTS journey?
Momo: Awww, I feel so honoured! I don’t even know how my channel got so much attention, but I am forever grateful and appreciative of the community that we’ve built! I was just a girl who wanted to share her love of BTS. I wanted someone to talk to, someone to fangirl over BTS with. I never imagined that my channel, SugArmyy, would become a recognisable name. I truly, truly feel honoured. I always love hearing stories about how people first discover my channel, because it’s so fascinating to me.
Your channel has so many wonderfully fun and creative titles and compilations. How do you decide what video to make next? Does it start from a clip you’ve seen that sparks an idea?
Momo: Yes, that is generally how my video ideas bloom! I just watch a tonne of BTS content, and while I’m watching them, I notice patterns or moments I want to highlight. From there, I try to come up with other relevant moments to include.
On average, how long would you say it usually takes you to put a compilation together? And what's the hardest part of the process?
Momo: I actually timed myself editing a single, 10-minute video before. From collecting the video clips to exporting the edited video, it took a total of 14 hours. I was honestly surprised how long it takes. Time flies when I am editing. I would say the hardest part is the captioning. Sometimes, the clips I use do not have subtitles, so I have to research or try my best to figure out what is being said (with my limited Korean ability).
This might be a tough one, but if you had to pick one of your videos for a new ARMY, which one would it be and why?
Momo: OHH, this IS tough. I can think of some of my favourite funny videos, but I would have to say Love all seven of us| Why BTS isn't BTS without all 7 members is a great introduction to why BTS is BTS. OR I would suggest the FUNNIEST Run BTS moments that had BTS WHEEZING forever | try not to laugh if I want to make them laugh!
Another tough one, but if you could only choose one of your own as a personal favourite, which one would it be and why? (Mine is the Funniest Run BTS.)
Momo: Oh wow, I guess great minds think alike! I suggested the Funniest Run BTS series in the previous question because I think it’s such a great way to see their dynamic and their comedic side. Aside from that, my all-time favourite video is BTS bringing out the tsundere in Yoongi and loving it because Yoongi’s tsundere moments are my favourite!
What’s even more impressive is that you provide subtitles in over 18 languages for viewers around the world. Do you have a team helping you with that? And what inspired you to do it?
Momo: I’m glad that you brought it up, because I feel like it is not very well known. I do have a team of wonderful translators who volunteer to translate each video whenever they want. I truly appreciate their work and support for my channel. Once I realised how big BTS was internationally, I knew I had to provide more than just English subtitles. I wanted ARMYs from anywhere in the world to have access to BTS content.
Let's touch briefly on BTS and your personal journey with them. How did you first discover them, and what was it that drew you in specifically?
Momo: I have mentioned this in my 500k Q&A video before, but my friend showed me the No More Dreams MV because she knew I liked Kpop. She was like, “Look at this new group!”, and I was instantly hooked. They stood out because their concepts were very different from other groups. My first bias was Taehyung; he caught my eye immediately!
For those who perhaps are just starting to go down the rabbit hole or are simply intrigued, what album, in your opinion, is the best introduction and provides a small insight into them as artists?
Momo: This is a really tough question, and I think it depends if the person is already familiar with Kpop or not. I personally love the Love Yourself:Tear album, because it touches on various genres. It showcases their versatility in their music style, how clever they are with their lyrics and how much emotion they convey through music.
As the iconic Chapter Two era is seemingly coming to an end, how have you enjoyed this chapter, and which album has been the standout?
Momo:I cannot believe it is already 2025! I remember watching the infamous FESTA video and being devastated but also hopeful for the future at the same time. They really prepared and blessed us with amazing content and music, so I didn’t really feel the emptiness that I thought I would feel. With that being said, I think my favourite album is Indigo by Namjoon. This is a tough question, but I LOVE the vibe of the whole album. It’s somehow nostalgic, calming, relatable and freeing at the same time. Namjoon really is a genius when it comes to lyrics and words.
Finally, you’re nearly at 100K subscribers. What would be the next goal in your creative journey?
Momo: I am still in disbelief of how many of you are out there watching my videos! It sometimes scares me! (laughs). Numbers are not everything, but I do want to hit 1 million subscribers and do something to celebrate and give back to the community. I am still thinking about it, though. My goal right now in my creative journey is to branch off to a different type of video, staying on the topic of BTS. I have been thinking about trying out new types of content (long-form, podcast-type videos to video-essay-type videos). However, I haven’t been able to come up with ideas that I LOVE.
