[Mini Interview] CATCH THE YOUNG on Creating a Youth Drama and Gearing up for Festival Season

CATCH THE YOUNG
dropped their latest digital single "Ideal Type" on June 26, delivering a refreshing summer anthem that explores the awkward honesty of young love and confession. The synth-rock track represents the band's continued evolution as they experiment with new sounds while staying true to their core identity of crafting music about youth and growing up.

The accompanying music video which is surpassed an impressive 1 million views since it's release, perfectly captures the song's youthful essence, featuring the five members enjoying carefree moments in scenic countryside settings, complete with bright sunshine, grassy fields, and an ocean lighthouse. These cinematic visuals reinforce the band's signature themes of innocence and the journey of self-discovery.

Music critic Lim Heeyun praised the release as "a pop alchemy experiment in pursuit of the golden combination of pop and rock," noting how it showcases the band's confidence and artistic growth compared to their previous experimental six-minute instrumental track "The Young Wave," released in April.

With festival season in full swing, the band is preparing for several major appearances that will help them reach new audiences. Their upcoming performances include the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, the 2025 Jeonju Ultimate Music Festival (marking their second consecutive year), and their debut performance at the 2025 Sound Planet Festival. We caught up with the band in a roundtable to discuss their latest single and what they're looking forward to this summer.

If "Ideal Type" could be the theme song for a TV show, what show would it be?

Sani: I think it would be amazing if this song were used as the second round of OST for a school romance drama featuring rising rookie actors as students. I had this vision for a long time.

You are performing at the Incheon Pentaport Music Festival soon. Are there other bands you are excited to see?

Sani: There's a band called ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION headlining the first day, and I love them. We call them "Ajikan" for short. They're a legendary band in the Japanese rock scene and honestly one of the artists I look up to the most. I believe the last time they came to Korea was over 10 years ago, so it's been a long time, and I'm super excited to finally see them live. They're one of the bands that laid the foundation for the J-rock and J-pop sounds that are popular in Korea today, so I really hope I get to hear some of my favorite songs live this time.
