After much anticipation, SOYOU is officially back. The beloved vocalist dropped the single "PDA" on July 16 —her first release since signing with label Magic Strawberry Sound—and it's already clear that this marks a pivotal transformation in her artistic journey.

For years, SOYOU has been synonymous with emotional ballads and soundtrack excellence, earning her the well-deserved title of "OST queen" through memorable contributions to beloved K-dramas. Her voice became the soundtrack to countless romantic and tearful moments on screens. But with "PDA," she's boldly stepping away from that comfort zone, embracing a sound that's both refreshingly contemporary and deliciously nostalgic.

The track itself is a sonic departure from her previous work, blending R&B foundations with early 2000s pop sensibilities and dance influences. The Miami bass-inspired rhythm in the latter half creates what is described as an irresistible pulse that mirrors the emotional climax of giving in to pure feeling. The track showcases vocal versatility that fans have always known she possessed but get to experience in such an uninhibited context.

The music video embraces candid sensibilities and reimagines Y2K aesthetics through a distinctly modern lens, creating what feels like a nostalgic fever dream. The visual narrative captures the intoxicating rush of new romance with an authenticity that feels both intimate and cinematic. Although known as an OST queen, SOYOU reminds fans of her impressive dance prowess, moving with a confident fluidity.

KpopWise was fortunate enough to discuss the comeback song with SOYOU in this interview.

Congratulations on releasing your new single PDA”! What inspired you to explore a bolder and more confident side of love in this track?

I think the biggest inspiration came from joining a new label and asking myself, “What new side of me can I show here?” Honestly, I’ve always envied couples who aren’t afraid of showing affection in public. It’s something I normally can’t do, which made me want to explore it through music.

The sound of PDA feels like a fresh step forward in your solo journey. What kind of sonic evolution did you go through for this project?

There was a lot of thought and discussion throughout the process. From writing to recording, it was a song built on countless conversations and reflections.

You’re known for your powerful vocals, but how did you approach vocal expression differently in PDA”?

Because this song carries a very different vibe, I actually pulled back a lot of power and focused more on delicate expression—breathing life into the song with subtlety.

The music video and concept film reinterpret Y2K aesthetics in a modern way. What drew you to that era for inspiration?

I think it was an era defined by boldness, freedom, and optimism. Its flashy yet carefree energy resonated with me, so rather than copying it as nostalgia, I wanted to reinterpret it in my own colors.

Was there a specific moment or idea that led to the direction of the visuals for PDA”?

Losing weight changed how I felt about myself and the overall vibe. It wasn’t about showing more skin, but about wanting to feel confident in any outfit—whether pants or tops. As for the concept, we shaped it gradually through many conversations until the direction felt right.

You’ve shown many sides as a solo artist, from soulful ballads to polished pop. Where does PDA sit within your artistic identity?

Rather than placing it in a specific category, I see this song as proof that I can embrace and enjoy different genres. It gave me confidence to take on whatever new style comes my way.

If listeners could walk away with just one feeling or message from PDA, what would you want it to be?

Life passes by so quickly. Whether it’s love, travel, or time with friends, I hope people fully enjoy those precious moments while they can.
