[Exclusive Interview] Rovv on Taking Risks and Braving Uncertainty

Rovv is a South Korean hip-hop/R&B artist and singer-songwriter who has released over 50 tracks and garnered millions of streams since his debut in 2018.

Inspired by his personal experiences and love, he expresses love through music that combines emotional lyrics, soft melodies, and delicate sensibilities. His sound is based on pop R&B and contemporary R&B, and combines elements of hip-hop, trap, and pop to create a unique musical color.

Formerly a member of the R&B trio The Good Days Boys with Jimmy Brown and Sweet The Kid, Rovv has successfully completed a 17-city world tour including North America and Europe in 2023, further solidifying his position as a global R&B artist.

What inspired you to create "Roll The Dice," and how did the concept for this song come together?

"Roll The Dice" was inspired by the tension and excitement of life's uncertain moments. One day, the soft piano and guitar sounds from a jazz bar mixed with R&B beats in my head, and that became the starting point. The concept was to capture the thrill of rolling the dice through sound and lyrics. With my team, we imagined a smoky casino atmosphere and refined the song naturally from there.

How did the collaboration with DeVita come about, and what was it like working with her on the track?

The collaboration with DeVita happened by chance. While looking for a voice for the second verse, a friend recommended her unique tone, and I contacted her right away. She brought both intensity and softness to the track. I was amazed by her musical instincts, and our ideas breathed new life into the song.

The title "Roll The Dice" suggests themes of risk and chance—what personal experiences or emotions drove these lyrics?

This title came from reflecting on moments in my life where I took risks. Choosing music as a career and diving into love were both like taking chances. The lyrics especially capture the uncertainty of relationships and the emotional rollercoaster I felt. I wanted to share those honest feelings with listeners.

Can you walk us through your creative process for this track? Did the melody or lyrics come first?

The melody came first this time. I hummed it over a basic beat in a dark room, and that became the backbone of the song. Then, the phrase "Roll The Dice" came to mind, and the lyrics naturally followed. For this song, I visualized a scene first and then filled in the story to match.

How does "Roll The Dice" represent your evolution as an R&B artist compared to your previous work?

This song is a result of me going deeper musically. Previously, I expressed emotions intuitively, but now I focus on weaving those emotions into a story. I also experimented with fusing light jazz instruments with R&B, which I think shows my growth.

What do you hope listeners take away from "Roll The Dice" on an emotional level?

I hope listeners feel freedom and courage from this song. The feeling of boldly jumping into uncertain moments and the genuine emotions that emerge from that—I want to share that. I hope my music can be a small comfort to someone.

"Roll The Dice." It's the song that best shows where my music is now, and it's both emotional and energetic, so you can immediately understand my style.

Is there a genre you would want to switch up and try in the future?

Actually, I love many genres. From emerging new jazz to sexy drill, jazz pop, acoustic, trap soul, easy-listening hip-hop, and more. I try to take on whatever challenges I feel like at the moment. My goal is to mix them with modern beats and reinterpret them in my own color. It's important to try new things without losing the emotional thread of my music.

If you were to go on tour again, which places would you like to visit?

The energy from the last tour is unforgettable. The fans in the US and Europe were beyond expectations—they showed so much love. Of course, I want to go back to the US and Europe, and also visit Asian countries. Starting with Japan, then Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, China—I want to go everywhere! If the fans support me, I'll go anywhere!

I'm preparing my first album. I want to deeply share my musical world with fans, and I plan to showcase new collaborations and visual projects. I also want to communicate directly on more stages. See you soon!
